Herbert Lawrence was born in Lode (Newmarket Q2-1894 3B:515) son of William and Emily LAWRENCE (née HART).
1901 census...Aged 6, he was at Longmeadow, Lode with his father William LAWRENCE [52] master bricklayer born Little Swaffham; his mother Emily [45]; brothers Sidney [22] bricklayer, Frederick [17] apprentice bricklayer, Joseph [15] apprentice bricklayer and Eton [10] and sisters Rosa [12] and Elizabeth [4]. All, except his father, were born in Lode. There was an older brother Arthur William [1877] 1911 census...Aged 16, a bricklayer's labourer, he was still at Longmeadow with his parents, sisters Rose and Elizabeth and brother Eton (bricklayer's labourer. He enlisted in Cambridge.
On the 8th October 1916 the 1st/8th Battalion, Middlesex Regiment were in a support role on the Somme, near Trones Wood (between Montauban and Guillemont). They lost 5 men killed on the 8th, all have unknown graves.
